TEDxHISD -- Dr. Tim Daponte - Challenges of introducing and implementing a practical, applications based science course in the secondary schools Dr. Timothy C. Daponte has taught science in the Houston (Texas) Independent School District since 1982. He holds a doctorate in science education from The University of Houston where he studied schema theory and its relationship to physics education. He has been recognized for his teaching having been awarded the Crystal Apple Award from the Houston Chronicle for excellence in classroom education as well as the HEB Excellence in Education Lifetime Achievement Award, both in 2010. He is also a Fulbright Scholar, having taught physics in New Delhi, India. He is currently teaching physics at John H. Reagan High School in Houston. Dr. Daponte will be speaking on the challenges of introducing and implementing a practical, applications based science course in the secondary schools. Too often science is viewed only for the college preparatory students who are interested in studying science in college. As educators we are ignoring the majority of students who do not wish to go to college or who wish to study other fields. Essentially this is a high school class for high school students. Issues that will be addressed will center on how secondary science is viewed by educators. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
