Abbot Martin Werlen OSB was elected 58th abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Einsiedeln and nominated by Pope John Paul II in 2001. He is a member of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Switzerland and holds a degree in psychology and theology. The abbey, founded 934, is one of the most renowned Benedictine monasteries in the world. Einsiedeln is an international place of pilgrimage, spirituality, education and culture. The community numbers 75 monks at Einsiedeln and 26 nuns at Fahr Convent. Einsiedeln is the only Benedictine monastery whose abbot heads religious communities for both men and women.About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
