TEDxFullerton - Bruce Babad-Joe Jewell - Jazz Improvisation As Conversation

In the 1920's, jazz improvisation began as a simple set of variations upon a melodic theme. By the 1940's the bebop musicians had abandoned the melody in favor of improvising over the harmony of a particular tune. By the 1960's, progressive jazz musicians were taking much greater risks, including the complete abandonment of rhythm, harmony, melody and form in order to more freely express themselves. But, the one element that remained throughout this evolution is communication, communication among the performers and communication with the audience. Prof. Bruce Babad and Dr. Joe Jewell will discuss and demonstrate how a piece of music can be constructed from nothing but this communication. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
