TEDxCardiff - Matthew Cashmore - The Sociological Power Of The Geek

Matthew Cashmore is the Innovation Ecosystem Manager at Lonely Planet. His role is to allow external developers and content producers to engage with the brand and its experience. He is responsible for making Blog Sherpa and Groups a success and creating an ecosystem of amazing people around Lonely Planet and its content. Before working for Lonely Planet Matthew was the Senior Research Producer for BBC Research and Innovation. He co-ran the project, the BBC's developer network designed to encourage innovation and support new talent. Within his work for Mathew ran projects such as Innovations Labs -- a regional initiative inviting independent new media companies to respond to technology briefs set by the corporation. He was the BBC producer of Hack London 2007, an event run in partnership with Yahoo! to open up APIs from both organisations to developers in Europe. Matthew also produced Mashed08 at Alexandra Palace, the second iteration of Hack Day in the UK. Prior to joining backstage Matthew spent a brief period at UBC Media where he was integral in developing a working commercial model for podcasting, and produced the podcasts for The Times, The Sun, The Telegraph and the major record labels. During his first period at the BBC Matthew constantly pushed the boundaries of technology and traditional thinking within the organisation. Achievements include launching the Where I Live sites, building the Travel News portal, and launching the now defunct BBC Surfing Portal. Matthew started his professional life as an Aerospace Engineer, since then he's presented Radio shows, built databases of interesting places to visit in England and struggled with the advanced concepts of XSLT and the delivery of complex podcasts. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
