On a recent trip home from school aboard an EVSC school bus, two students from Glenwood Leadership Academy had an opportunity to shine, through courageous behavior in helping other fellow students off the bus as a fire extinguisher accidentally began expelling its contents. These students were honored during the regular meeting of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation Board of School Trustees on 9/26/2011.These two young men were among students riding a bus home from school, when a musical instrument case propped near a fire extinguisher at the front of the bus, bumped the extinguisher setting it off. As the emission from the extinguisher began to fill the front of the bus, the driver pulled over and immediately began his protocol for a bus evacuation from the rear of the bus. While he went to the back of the bus to open the door, students lined up to evacuate. Several younger students in the front did not move, and one of the young men, before the driver could investigate, went to the front and had them follow him from the bus. One young girl did not, and in the cloud of emission stood crying in the aisle. The other young man started to leave the bus, but can be seen on video looking back. Seeing the young girl, he went to the front covering his mouth and nose with his shirt, picked up the child, and returned to the rear of the bus to exit.
