Harvard School of Excellence: A Turnaround Model in Chicago

Before 2007, the Harvard School for Excellence was struggling. Ranked among the ten worst elementary schools in all of Illinois, Harvard needed radical change. Now, three years later, it typifies the key components of the turnaround model: hire a new principal; replace most of the teachers with more highly-trained ones; build a curriculum based on high expectations and frequent assessments; and create a culture of curiosity and respect.
