The Middle East in Transformation
On March 16, 2011, the Foreign Policy Initiative (FPI) hosted an event at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., "Democratization in the Middle East? Implications of the Arab Spring." In this, the first panel of the afternoon, Carnegie Endowment Senior Fellow Michele Dunne and Foundation for Defense of Democracy Senior Fellow Reuel Marc Gerecht assessed the state of play of the revolutions in Egypt, Bahrain, and Libya, and analyzed how Islamists in the Middle East are dealing with the challenge of democracy. FPI Director Robert Kagan, a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, served as moderator.
