Garden Gate and Fence Part 1 - Setting Fence Posts
Learn how to build a fence with a decorative arbor gate with help from Lowe's Shop Class. This project requires an extra set of hands, so grab a friend. Depending on where you live, you may need to get building permits, or check your local code requirements. Also, tell your homeowners association, and check with your local utilities to make sure you're not digging near any underground hazards. In the United States, you can call your local utilities by dialing 811. Make sure your fence straight by running a string line between two stakes at its location. Your posts will be placed six inches off of that string. Mark their positions with four stakes. Use a posthole digger to dig holes. Each locality has different rules about posthole depth, so check your local building codes. Next add some gravel. Add 4 to 6 inches of gravel to the bottom of each hole for drainage. There are two types of post for this project. For the fence post use a 4x4, and for the arbor posts use a 4x6. Use pressure-treated lumber, to help the fence and arbor stand up to the elements. Cut your arbor posts to length in advance, but use the fence posts full length and then trim them once they are in position. To get the length for the arbor posts, measure the hole from grade to gravel and then add 96 inches. Have a friend help you get the poles in place. Once they're in position, stand them straight up, and then use post level and a measuring tape to make sure everything is in the exact right position. Then, lock them into place using quickset concrete. Just pour in a bag, add water according to the manufacturer's instructions, and then before it hardens, check the posts to make sure they're still straight. Now, once it's solid, go along the line and trim both fence posts using a circular saw. Now that you have your posts in place, watch the next video to find out how to add the arbor on top of the entrance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE41_9OH1Os Find the lumber and power tools you will need for this project at http://www.Lowes.com
