Yayoi Kusama at the WHITNEY MUSEUM

James Kalm, in the midst of a midsummer heat wave, makes a early morning trek to attend the press preview for this retrospective of iconic Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Having a career arch that extends over sixty years, and includes fame in America, Europe and Asia, Kusama is perhaps the best known female artist alive. Yayoi Kusama's incredibly prolific practice includes: oil and acrylic painting, water color, collage, assemblage, sculpture, photography and filmmaking as well as stints as a performance artist and avant-garde raconteur. She was a founding influence of Proto Feminist art, Feminist art, and Post-Feminist art and as she enters her eighth decade she's attained recognition as a world wide celebrity.
