CPLY X- Rated At PAUL KASMIN GALLERY

James Kalm skipped the Anselm Kiefer and Luc Tuymans openings to bring viewers this long overdue tribute to art world legend CPLY (William N. Copely 1919-1996). Left on the steps of a foundling hospital in New York City, William was adopted and relocated to Southern California. As an early supporter of the Surrealists, his attempts at art dealing flopped, but his relationships with the artists brought him within their circle. As a painter, his simplified figures, strange narratives and extensive use of patterning brought him to the attention of the Pop artists and eventually he was recognized as a precursor of "Bad Painting" one of the most influential movements of Post-Modernism.
