Panda cub made of sugar and spice

Veterinarians at the San Diego Zoo say the 6-week-old giant panda cub is a healthy girl. Weighing in at 67 ounces or 4 pounds and measuring 1.4 feet long, the cub is the third female giant panda born at the San Diego Zoo. The first was Hua Mei in 1999 and Su Lin in 2005. A male cub, Mei Sheng, was born in 2003. "She is developing right along schedule," said Meg Sutherland-Smith, DVM, San Diego Zoo veterinarian. "She's becoming more animated. She was vocalizing more than she did in the first exam. She is also losing her baby fuzz and getting her adult coat." Following Chinese tradition, the newborn cub, born Aug. 3 at the San Diego Zoo's Giant Panda Research Station, will receive a name after she is 100 days old. Bai Yun and the cub can be seen 24 hours a day through the Zoo's Panda Cam at . The San Diego Zoo is currently home to five giant pandas, Bai Yun and her newborn cub, the father Gao Gao, 4-year-old Mei Sheng and 2-year-old Su Lin.
