GO TO: Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I'm trying to get into writing music in the vein of guitarists like; Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour and Robben Ford. But, I feel like I can't exactly get those really cool chords they play. And, I can't seem to sort-out that smooth and easy melody style that they have. Do you have any songwriting tips that can help me with writing in this contemporary guitar style? Wyatt -- San Antonio, TX. United States A: This style of music is a real cosmopolitan blend of; pop, R&B, soul, Blues, some Jazz & a few other styles as well, and so it requires a fairly solid knowledge-base of chord inversions, as well as, a really good connection to building nice jazz flavored melodies, (without really getting too jazzy overall). So, in this lesson I'll go through the basics concerning popular chords used for this style, as well as, a few straight-forward melody concepts that you can try incorporating to help you develop this particular guitar style made so popular by the guitarists that you mentioned in your question to me. So, let's zoom in on the neck and get started on Songwriting Tips for Contemporary Electric Guitar.
