GO TO: Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: One thing I always struggle with in writing Jazz Fusion style is getting cool notes around chord changes that drift out of the key. I'm fine when the chords being played are in one key signature, but when I add a chord that I like that isn't in the key I get hammered in finding cool notes to fit around it. I often do this with changes in my time signatures as well, so any tips with this kind of writing approach would really help me tons. Thanks a hundred times over for creating your YouTube and your websites! Dennis -- Mississauga, ON. Canada A: Jazz Fusion is a great style because the implied concept revolves around fusing several styles in order to write the music. And, I like the concept of applying almost any kind of musical idea to make melodies & harmonies. However, with this compositional approach we often do find chords showing up that are not found inside the key. The question becomes how in the world can we cover those chord appearances? Have a close look at the piece I composed for this video lesson since there are chords that do not occur within the key center in the piece and to cover them while soloing, or while composing. Watch the video and check out the tips I offer to kick start your guitar playing with these kinds of situations.
