GO TO: Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: When I try and play over a jazz style progression that modulates keys I find myself getting completely lost. To me it seems that there are just endless complicated ways of playing over these progressions. Sometimes I think I'm getting too wrapped up in the names of the situations and all of the applications that go along with them. In a Tony Rice video I watched online - he'd mentioned that you'll always create good music if you follow the sound itself. And, that good music can come without having to learn a lot of theory. Howard Roberts also spoke of this calling it the "Subtractive Process." Can you explain this way of thinking; I could really use this approach to get me out of the rut I'm in these days! - Richard, Albany NY A: Playing by instinct really starts to make a major difference in one's playing! And, several jazz teachers also promote this concept as well. This idea is basically all about using your ear to move around notes eliminating notes that you don't like. In the video lesson, we'll use a typical jazz progression and do some basic analysis, then discuss this method on the guitar neck.
