GO TO: Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I am mainly a rock player, but I've been working at opening my mind up to the world jazz. Many of the great guitar players seem to understand jazz and they say it helps them to understand more about music overall. My question is -- since I do like rock more; can Major and Minor Seventh chords be somehow used in Hard-Rock? Or, are they only found as a part of Jazz music? From what I've seen, only the dominant seventh seems to be used in Rock. Can you please shed some light on this, your lesson videos and the way you explain things are the by far best on the internet! - Dominick, New Zealand A: To bring these sounds into your playing, you'll need to learn a number of Rock Specific seventh shapes on the fingerboard -- these shapes will lend themselves much more effectively to the rock sound and style.
