A Conversation with the Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff moderated by Jeffrey Goldberg at the 2008 Aspen Ideas Festival. Michael Chertoff is the second US secretary of Homeland Security for the US Department of Homeland Security. He was sworn into this position in 2005. Formerly, Chertoff served as United States circuit judge for the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. He was previously confirmed by the Senate to serve in the Bush Administration as assistant attorney general for the Criminal Division at the Department of Justice. As assistant attorney general, he helped trace the 9/11 terrorist attacks to the al-Qaida network, and worked to increase information sharing within the FBI and with state and local officials. Jeffrey Goldberg is the staff writer and Middle East correspondent for the New Yorker Goldberg, based in Washington, D.C.. He joined the staff of the New Yorker in 2000.Previously, he was a writer for the New York Times Magazine, covering the Middle East and Africa. He has also covered the mafia for New York Magazine, served as the New York bureau chief of the Forward, and been a columnist for the Jerusalem Post. He began his career as a police reporter for the Washington Post.
