The DeFeo family of six was murdered in their home in Amityville, Long Island (New York) on November 13, 1974. This radio news bulletin on WOR, New York City, indicates that a family has been found in the house shot to death and that only the son, Ronald, is a survivor. As it turned out, Ronald was later convicted of the murders. The DeFeo murders inspired various books and the 1979 movie, "The Amityville Horror," which dealt with the supposed haunting of the house rather than the original murders. Various sequels of the film followed. This news bulletin was found on a tape of a Jean Shepherd radio show that appears to be incorrectly dated March 5, 1975 (well after the murders). However, the Shepherd collection - now on archive.org - is missing the show from November 13, 1974 and this tape appears to be from that show despite the later date.
