Sen. Eugene McCarthy's showing in the 1968 New Hampshire primary on an anti-Vietnam war platform led President Johnson to drop out of the race. Sen. Robert Kennedy entered, competing with McCarthy for the anti-Vietnam War vote. VP Hubert Humphrey ultimately won in the primary after Kennedy was assassinated. Humphrey then lost to Richard Nixon.
