In 1969, radio commentator Jean Shepherd told a story of how he learned to do live show performances in the late 1940s. The British have an expression - Sitting by Nelly - for learning a job by just watching someone else do it. In this case, Shepherd ended up learning by imitating another radio performer of the day, Tom Breneman.
