18.2.1 Describe the composition of a buffer solution and explain its action IB Chemistry HL

Buffers are composed of a weak acid and its salt OR a weak base and its salt. Buffers resist a change in pH when a SMALL amount of acid or base is added. Any H+ or OH- added to a buffer will react either to form water or be locked away in the undissociated acid or base, thus preventing any pH change. Many medicines are buffered to prevent pH change in the body, and your blood naturally has multiple buffers.
