4.2.10 Describe the structure of and bonding in silicon and silicon dioxide IB Chemistry SL

Both are macromolecules (giant covalent structures) with many strong covalent bonds. Silicon has the same arrangement of atoms as diamond, and silicon dioxide (sand) is the same as silicon - just pop an O atom between each silicon pair. Since there are no delocalised electrons, both chemicals are electrical insulators. (HL only : all atoms are sp3 hybridised)
