A.8.4 Describe conjugation of double bonds and wavelength of absorption IB Chemistry

As the number of conjugate double bonds increases less energy is absorbed in order to excite the bonds. So ethene absorbs at a smaller wavelength than butadiene. Phenolphthalein is colorless in acid (absorbs UV since no more than 3 conjugated double bonds) and is purple in base (the molecule now has 4 conjugate double bonds and delocalization around --CO2-).
