Low level nuclear waste (gloves, paper etc used in the nuclear waste industry) is often left in cooling ponds until the radioactivity is at a safe level. It may then be dumped at sea. High level nuclear waste (fuel rods etc) is normally vitrified and deposited deep underground in steel containers, that should not leak into the water table.http://showcase.unis.org/SciLproJ/
