Although there is clear reference to a "King Cole," it is debatable which King Cole the rhyme refers to. The most probable suspects are Coel Godhebog (b. 220), Decurion of Rome, also known as Cole the Magnificent; Coel Hen (c. 350 -- c. 420), a leader in Roman or Sub-Roman Britain, also known as Coel the Old; and St. Ceneu ap Coel, son of Coel Hen (c. 382).
