A video, intended mainly for my colleagues in teaching, describing the evolution of my use of the smartphone, and a tongue-in-cheek notion that our brains will evolve much faster when we use them. Essentially, this is a tour of the apps I have found beneficial on my android phone to coordinate information and improve my teaching. In step 1, it was nice to be able to open up the communication channels. In step 2, it was amazing to always have mental stimulation at my fingertips; no more bored minutes. In step 3, I realized that I was using my phone as essentially a second brain that could filter through multiple streams of information (metaphorically like working memory), store the information for later processing (much as short-term memory) and then organize that information into relational schema just as in long-term memory. I am still in the midst of step 4, maximizing teaching content for use on smartphones (and tablets) and encouraging social collaboration in the form of creating personal learning networks for myself and my students. I apologize that it is so long but perhaps you could listen to it while mowing the lawn :).
