Kepler mission spies the phases of a planet

The Kepler mission is designed to look for Earthlike planets orbiting other stars. Its first scientific result was to see the change in brightness of a star (HAT-P-7) as a Jupiter-sized planet orbits it. This animation shows the brightness change as the planet passes in front of and behind the star.
