The classification of any English vowel system is normaly based on vowel length. The E-Lecture shows that length is not the key factor for the classification of NAE vowels, rather it is a binary system that distinguishes between simple vowels and vowels plus an (off)glide. As a result, the phonemic transcription system as used by Labov in his Atlas of North American English will be introduced.
