He said that Mubarak acknowledged in a phone call that the status quo in Egypt cannot be maintained. President Obama said that the recent events in Egypt must lead to fair and free elections, and that the transition must be peaceful. Even though many questions about Egypt's future remain unanswered, the U.S. remains committed to maintaining a strong partnership, he said.
