COMING UP Jan. 5: Miles O'Brien Examines Technology's Impact on the Brain

Technology like smart phones, video chat, and interactive video games mean more people -- and especially young people -- are multitasking. NewsHour Science Correspondent and chronic multitasker Miles O'Brien explores what impact multitasking has on mature and developing brains in a report airing Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011 on PBS NEWSHOUR. O'Brien speaks with researchers whose studies show that multitasking -- such as talking on the phone while driving -- takes a 40 percent bite out of the average person's brain power. Others argue that young people who multitask are digital natives adapting to a society dependent upon technology. All the new gadgets, they say, help build brains better suited for that environment.
