The animation begins by showing the normal anatomy and physiology of the pancreas, including the structure and function of exocrine cells. as well as that of groups of endocrine cells, called the islets of Langerhans. The pathophysiology of pancreatic cancer is portrayed, focusing on the formation of an exocrine tumor, called an adenocarcinoma. Multiple treatments are depicted, including three surgical procedures: the Whipple procedure (pancreatoduodenectomy), total pancreatectomy, and distal pancreatectomy. Other treatments are shown, including external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), brachytherapy, systemic and regional chemotherapy, and targeted therapy, featuring erlotinib.
