Shepard Honored at 50th Anniversary Celebration of Freedom 7 Flight

The Golden Anniversary of the flight of the first American in space was commemorated with a special ceremony at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Complex 5/6 blockhouse near NASA's Kennedy Space Center. That's where, on May 5, 1961, astronaut Alan B. Shepard, Jr., began his historic, 15-minute mission aboard his Freedom 7 capsule. Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter and members of the Shepard family were joined by NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, former astronaut Bob Cabana and more than 200 workers from the original Mercury program in celebrating the historic anniversary. The event included a re-creation of Shepard's flight and recovery, as well as a tribute to his contributions as a moonwalker on the Apollo 14 lunar mission.
