Special thanks to Oak View Middle School for the video footage. Throughout the year, the Department's Literacy League book club connects prominent authors with Florida middle and elementary school students. Students submit questions about the book and the author responds via video. The Literacy League videos are available on Department's YouTube channel . Ms. Shaw's book follows 11-year-old Solomon as he and his parents, who are newly freed slaves, build their new home in the North Florida wilderness. It details their battle to thrive amongst uncertain weather, resources and cultures.
