The Threat of Nuclear Terrorism

Laura Holgate, VP for Russia/New Independent States Programs, Nuclear Threat Initiative This talk focuses on what Laura Holgate calls "one of the greatest threats of the day"--the threat of terrorists armed with nuclear weapons. Holgate begins by discussing groundbreaking events of the Johnson administration--multilateral efforts to reduce the military threats of the day, strategic arms negotiations between the United States and the Soviet Union, and the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. She then discusses the new security challenges the country faces today with the rise of "sophisticated, well-funded actors" and lays out a prescription for averting nuclear terrorism. The presentation concludes with a question-and-answer session. Introduction by Alan J. Kuperman, LBJ School Assistant Professor of Public Affairs.
