Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are unmanned robotic submarines that are powered and controlled from the surface through a long tether. MBARI's newest ROV, the Doc Ricketts, is about the size of a minivan and can dive to a depth of 4,000 meters (13,000 feet). This video opens with an aerial view of MBARI's flagship research vessel, the Western Flyer, which serves as a host ship for the ROV. The rest of the video shows the ROV being launched throuh the "moonpool" between the Western Flyer's twin hulls.
