Rinderpest eradicated: veterinarians win battle against cattle plague

In 2011, for only the second time in history, a deadly disease was declared eradicated. The disease, rinderpest, caused famine in Asia, Europe and Africa and contributed to the fall of Rome and the French Revolution. The dreaded disease was responsible for suffering and death over many centuries. An article in the July 1 issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (http://www.avma.org/onlnews/javma/jul11/110701a.asp) details the fight to eradicate this deadly disease. Dr. Ron DeHaven, chief executive officer of the American Veterinary Medical Association, explains in this video that the fall of rinderpest is an example of the many things that veterinarians have accomplished to make the lives of people, and animals, much better.
