The Special Olympics were created in 1968, at a time that people with intellectual disabilities were often institutionalized. The Special Olympics are small events all over the country, that empower and support people with intellectual disabilities and work to fight intolerance. As Tim Shriver, the Chairman and CEO of the Special Olympics, says, "When we think of great diplomats, how many people would think of a 15 year old with downs syndrome as an agent of diplomatic healing, communication, understanding?
