The [E2] Pathway in Acyclic Compounds

Even though the [E2] process is stereospecific, sometimes more than one minimum energy pathway may exist. This webcast shows a typical case: one pathway may lead to a cis alkene while another may lead to a trans alkene. The stereospecific antiperiplanar pathway that gives the trans product tends to be the preferred (i.e., stereoselective) pathway.
