Getting Started Stand straight on the floor with your feet shoulder-width apart. Keep your shoulders back and your spine neutral.? Hold a dumbbell in each hand. Since this is a controlled movement, pick a weight that isn't too heavy for you.? Extend the dumbbells over your head. Your arms should come up straight over your shoulders in a comfortable position.? Perform the Exercise Now that you're standing in the start position, you can do the side bends.? Begin with the dumbbells extended straight above your shoulders.?* Bend your upper body to the right side.? * Remember to bend at the middle of your abdomen. Only move from the waist up. Don't let your weight move you forward or backward. * Then bend your abdomen to the left side.? Keep your arms extended over your head as you bend. A different way to complete this exercise is by keeping the dumbbells down at your sides and sliding them up and down your legs as you bend. * Make sure you keep your feet planted to the floor when you move.? * Continue bending from side to side 15 times in four sets.?
