What Are Prime and Composite Numbers? --------------------------------------------------------------------- Natural whole numbers (1, 2, 3, 4...) can be classified as either prime or composite numbers. A prime number is a number whose only factors are one and itself. A composite number, as opposed to a prime number,?has additional factors besides being divisible by itself.?To begin, the number "1" is a special case in that it is neither prime, nor composite, but it is used to make other numbers prime.?The number "2" is the first prime number, and it is the only even number that is prime, because every other even number is divisible by two.?Test some whole numbers to get a good idea about prime and composite numbers.?Note that there is no immediate way to know if a larger number is prime or composite, except to divide and test for factors, or use tests for divisibility.
