It's important to know the differences between them so you can choose the higher quality ones and play them with the correct programs. Digital Audio Formats --------------------------------------------------------------------- Lossless: This format is commonly found on audio CDs when you download music directly. The files are relatively large but have the best audio quality for playing on a computer, which can be useful for editing.? * WAV * AIFF Compressed Lossless: This format is common for music files downloaded from the internet. The files retain most of the audio quality but are heavily compressed. They also may be coded to prevent burning or moving to another computer.? * FLAC * m4a Compressed Lossy: This is the most common type of audio file. It is heavily compressed and loses some of the audio quality, so it's not ideal for professional purposes.? * mp3 * AAC * Windows Media Right-click on an audio file and scroll to Get Info to learn more about the kind and size of the file.
