GOP Candidate Supports Pot Legalization

Check out Bas Rutten's Liver Shot on MMA Surge: It's no secret that former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson is pro pot. The two-term governor and 2012 candidate for the Republican presidential nomination has been an advocate of legalizing pot for years, including his guest spot on the Colbert Report in 2010. Since his April 21st Twitter announcement that he is officially running for president, Johnson has stepped-up his controversial stance on soft drugs. On Thursday July 7, 2011, the 58-year-old Johnson published an editorial for CNN entitled "Face Reality, Legalize Pot." In his editorial, Johnson argues that Richard Nixon's 40-year-old War on Drugs has failed the taxpayer and society at large. In a 1972 National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse backed by Nixon, it was stated that "The actual and potential harm of use of (pot) is not great enough to justify intrusion of the law into private behavior." As governor of New Mexico, Johnson found that half the spending for police, courts and prison was drug-related. He also states that criminalizing marijuana has created much of the same violence as with the prohibition of alcohol. He concludes his editorial by saying, "If Republicans are truly serious when they talk about liberty and fiscal responsibility, and if they truly do their homework on the drug war, many will soon join me in my call for rational drug policy reform in the United States."!/GovGaryJohnson/status/61053789259567104
