That's why I'm telling you first. I'm about to retire. Love you. Talk to you soon." An Achilles injury had been crippling Shaq's game, and after extensive physical therapy, surgery with a nine-month recovery time would be the only alternative.? O'Neal?opened up to ESPN Boston's Jackie MacMullan about his struggles trying to get back on the floor with the Celtics this past season:?"I'm letting everybody know now ... so the organization can try to get younger talent. I would love to come back, but they say once the Achilles is damaged it's never the same. I don't want to take that chance."? Arguably one of the greatest basketball players in the history of the game, O'Neal played for six pro teams: Orlando, the LA Lakers, Miami, Cleveland, Phoenix and most recently, the Boston Celtics.
