When It Matters --------------------------------------------------------------------- For the average exerciser, the order of your workout won't matter that much. The fact that you are working out at all is much better than spending time worrying about if you're doing it the right way. But if you have very specific goals, then it's important to keep the order of your workout in mind. Cardio or Weight Training First? --------------------------------------------------------------------- If your goal is to build muscle mass, hit the weight room prior to any running or other form of cardio you plan on doing. This is because you want to have the bulk of your glycogen stores available for weightlifting. Your glycogen stores are how your body stores the energy from the carbohydrates that you eat, saving them to fuel your muscles during a workout. Also, the cardio will leave you fatigued and more prone to injury. If your goal is to increase your endurance, do your cardio first when you're fresh and have more energy. But do be sure to fit some time in for weight training, as both parts are equally important in improving aerobic capacity and burning fat. Interval Training --------------------------------------------------------------------- A good way to switch up your workout and to incorporate both cardio and strength training into your workout is through interval training. To do this, you should do some form of cardio for a predetermined amount of time, then switch and spend the same amount of time on a weight-lifting exercise. For example, spend five minutes on the treadmill, five minutes performing chest presses, five minutes on the treadmill at a high incline, five minutes doing squats, five minutes running on the treadmill and then five minutes doing ab exercises. Additional Tips --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. During your weight-training session, do what you like to do least first, otherwise you might not do it at all. c?2. Similarly, start with the exercises that are the hardest for you so that you are not too tired to do them at the end of your workout. 3. Vary the order of the exercises you do so that you don't get bored with a monotonous workout and so that your muscles don't adapt to a set way of doing things. Read more by visiting our page at:
