### Single Digit Addition and Subtraction

Check out Bas Rutten's Liver Shot on MMA Surge: http://bit.ly/MMASurgeEp1 In this video, Mahalo math expert Allison Moffett shows you how to do single-digit addition and subtraction. If you have a problem like one plus three, you can use a number line to?visualize?the problem. So start at one on the number line and move over three spaces to the right (the positive direction). You've landed on four, thus one plus three is four. If you have a negative number in your problem like negative one plus three, start at negative one and move three spaces to the right. You've landed on two, which is your answer. Subtracting numbers works the same way as adding except you move to the left on the number line, which is also known as the negative direction. If you have two minus three, start at two and move three spaces to the left. You've landed on negative one, which is your answer. Convert Subtraction to Addition --------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have a problem like five minus four, you can change it into an addition problem. The phrase to remember is "never subtract, add the opposite." So in this case, don't subtract four, add negative four. Another example is five minus negative seven. This may seem confusing at first, but if you "never subtract, add the opposite," you'll end up with five plus seven, which equals 12. For five minus seven, you can change it to five plus negative seven. This equals negative two. Read more by visiting our page at: http://www.mahalo.com/single-digit-addition-and-subtraction/
