Learn Adobe Photoshop - Masking Effects

Learn guitar chords for FREE through our new game Chord Master: Mahalo expert Justin Z. gives a tutorial on masking effects in Photoshop. About Masking Effects --------------------------------------------------------------------- Once you have created a perfect vector mask you can apply some creative effects to it. The best part about applying effects to a vector mask is that the effects are scalable to the mask itself, so that no matter what you do to the mask, the effect will do the same. Using Masking Effects --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Press A to make sure the mask is selected and then Enter to make it invisible (press Enter again to make it visible if you need to access it).? 2. To browse a list of different effects you can use, just go up to the Filter menu at the top of your screen and that will prompt a drop-down menu filled with various options.? 3. To access a dialogue box with key effects, go down to the FX button at the bottom right of your screen.? 4. For the purpose of this tutorial, you can choose Blending Options at the top of the list. This will prompt the Layer Style window. All the other FX options below Blending Options in the previous list will prompt the Layer Style menu, however, when you choose Blending Options, you won't have to choose options from the Layer Style window, as it will set it up for you. For the purposes of this tutorial, we will focus on the various shadow effects.? Exploring Shadow Effects --------------------------------------------------------------------- Drop Shadow?adds a shadow around the layer, giving it depth. You can alter the Opacity of the shadow, the Angle it is coming from, the Distance, the Spread and the Size of the shadow.? Altering the Contour of the shadow will create some abstract effects to it.? Noise will change how many pixels are in the shadow, which will allow you to make it rough around the edges or smooth.? Inner Shadow is similar, but contains the shadow within the layer.? Outer Glow will create a glow around the layer, in which you can change its color. Once you are happy with your layer you can click Okay. In the Layers Menu you will now see?your chosen effects listed with little eye icons next to them. If you click these eyes, your effect will go away.? To trash them, just click and drag your effect into the Trash icon at the bottom.? If you have too many effects listed and want to hide them without undoing them, just click the tiny arrow next to them and they will become hidden.? To access the effect, double-click on the image (not the mask) and it will prompt the Layer Style window.?You can also go up to the Layer menu at the top of your screen, click on Layer Style and it will produce a sub-menu with all the effects listed.? If you wanted to place your chosen effect to another layer, click and drag the effect into the new layer and it will be applied. Play with the other effects to see what they can do. They can be used not just with masks but with layers and text as well.? Read more by visiting our page at:
