Overview --------------------------------------------------------------------- The Staten Island Ferry began service in 1905 between Whitehall Terminal in lower Manhattan and St. George Terminal on Staten Island. Over 20 million people a year are ferried over the Hudson River using the Staten Island Ferry, equating to over 35,000 trips annually. A typical weekday sees five ferries making 109 trips between the terminals, carrying about 65,000 passengers. The ride takes approximately 25 minutes and is completely free of charge. The ferry runs around the clock year-round, leaving approximately every 15 minutes during rush hour and every 30-60 minutes on nights and weekends. A holiday schedule is adhered to on New Year's Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. For a specific schedule, check out the New York City Department of Transportation website. While traveling the roughly 5 miles, you will see perfect views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the skyscrapers of Manhattan.c? Whitehall Terminal --------------------------------------------------------------------- Located at 4 South Street and Whitehall Street in New York City, the newest incarnation of the 200,000 square foot Whitehall Terminal opened in 2005. The space includes a 19,000 square foot waiting room, 6,000 square feet of retail, 10,000 square feet of office space, and 10,000 square feet of support and ferry operation rooms. There is a 75-foot-high entry hall through which the Manhattan skyline and harbor can be seen. Twenty-eight granite benches designed by artist Ming Fay have been installed throughout the terminal, mimicking the Indian canoes crossing New York Bay. Part of the terminal's heating and air conditioning system is powered by solar panels, aiding in the Department of Transportation's goals of protecting the environment.c? St. George Terminal --------------------------------------------------------------------- Located at One Ferry Terminal Drive in Staten Island, the St. George Terminal was erected in 1950 and renovated in 2005. The terminal is now designed with steel and glass, providing more natural lighting and floor-to-ceiling views of the harbor. Similar to Whitehall, St. George has a photovoltaic louver system that saves 25% of the energy used to operate the terminal. An additional 18,000 square feet of garden on the roof is also sustainable, relying solely on rain water for hydration. c? Read more by visiting our page at:
