History --------------------------------------------------------------------- Strawberry Fields, a 2.5 mile teardrop-shaped section of Central Park West located between 71st and 74th Streets, was renamed after the famous Beatles song "Strawberry Fields Forever" on March 26, 1981 as a tribute to the late John Lennon; it was then officially dedicated to the singer, songwriter and social activist on the 45th anniversary of his birth, October 9, 1985.?Lennon lived in the Dakota Apartments adjacent to this side of the park. This was also where he was murdered on December 8, 1980. Meaning Behind the Song --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Strawberry Fields Forever" was written by Lennon and recorded on November 24, 1966. The title corresponds to a Salvation Army orphanage called Strawberry Field near Woolton, Liverpool, where Lennon grew up in England. Imagine Mosaic --------------------------------------------------------------------- The famous Imagine Mosaic is located in Strawberry Fields. This distinctive piece of art was designed by a team of artists from Naples, Italy and named after one of Lennon's songs, "Imagine." Strawberry Fields Plaque --------------------------------------------------------------------- A bronze plaque has been implemented into this special area of Central Park, listing over 120 countries that have planted flowers and donated funding for the upkeep of Strawberry Fields. Each country, additionally, has endorsed this section of the park as a Garden of Peace which has been designed by landscape architect Bruce Kelly Anniversary Tributes --------------------------------------------------------------------- Every year on October 9 (John Lennon's birthday) and December 8 (the date of Lennon's date), fans and tourists from all over the world make pilgrimages to Strawberry Fields to pay respect to the slain musician and the legacy he and the Beatles have left behind.
