Step 1: Assess Given Information --------------------------------------------------------------------- Using the Pythagorean Theorem, you can either figure out if a triangle is a right triangle by the measure of its sides, or you can figure out the unknown length of one of the sides of a right triangle.c?The first thing you should do when deciding whether or not the Pythagorean Theorem can be used to solve a geometric problem is to assess the information you are given. Are you being asked if a triangle is a right triangle, and if so, do you know the lengths of each of its sides? Are you being asked to figure out the length of one side of a triangle, and if so, do you know that that triangle is a right triangle? ? ?? Step 2: Solve the Length of a Side --------------------------------------------------------------------- If your given information includes the fact that you are dealing with a right triangle and you are given the lengths of two sides of the triangle, you can figure out the length of the third side using the Pythagorean Theorem. First identify if the side you are trying to figure out is the hypotenuse of one of the smaller sides. If it is the side opposite the 90? angle, it is the hypoteneuse, denoted by c. For example, if you are given a right triangle with two sides measuring 3 and 4 and an unknown hypotenuse, you must plug the number 3 and 4 in for a and b. 3^2 + 4^2 = 9 + 16 = 25. Therefore, 25 = c^2. When you solve for the hypotenuse (c), you get c=√25. Thus, c=5.c?? Step 3: Prove a Triangle is a Right Triangle --------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are given the lengths of three sides of a triangle, you may use the Pythagorean Theorem in order to prove that the triangle is a right triangle.?If you are looking at a triangle with sides of length 3, 4, and 5, you must simply plug the three numbers in to the equation a^2 + b^2 = c^2 and see if the equation proves true.c? 5 is the longest side, so it is the hypotenuse (c). Does 3^2 + 4^2 = 5^2? As it does, your triangle is, in fact, a right triangle.c? ?? The Pythagorean Theorem Tips --------------------------------------------------------------------- * The Pythagorean Theorem only applies to right triangles.c??* A right triangle has one angle of 90?. c??* The Pythagorean Theorem states?a^2 + b^2= c^2 c? ?* C represents the longest side of a right triangle, also known as the hypotenuse. c Read more by visiting our page at: http://www.mahalo.com/the-pythagorean-theorem/
