The privately designed SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched the Dragon capsule into orbit from Florida's Cape Canaveral this morning for a roughly three-hour demonstration flight.? Reports say the SpaceX Dragon capsule "completed nearly two trips" around Earth before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean, where ships were sent to recover it.? SpaceX reported the successful landing on its Twitter account with one simple word: Splashdown!!!? SpaceX also noted that it "is the first commercial company to re-enter a spacecraft from space." This was the first of two planned full test flights that could ultimately lead to SpaceX providing "resupply flights" to the International Space Station.? Reports say SpaceX, a California-based company, has a $1.6 billion contract for 12 such cargo flights - which could eventually replace Space Shuttle missions, when the shuttles are retired in 2011. Gwynne Shotwell, the president of SpaceX, tells the ''Christian Science Monitor'' that if both missions are successful, SpaceX "could launch its first space-station resupply mission" as early as November of next year.
