On September 30, 2008, the Seidman College of Business hosted an emergency summit at Grand Valley State University to explore the intricacies of the global financial crisis in the United States and in West Michigan. "Historic Financial Crisis: A West Michigan Conversation," included panel presentations from and discussion between six academics and practitioners.Michael Hampton, vice president for investments at Raymond James & Associates, began his career in the securities industry in 1979 as a financial consultant with Fittin, Cunningham & Lauzon. He joined Thomson McKinnon Securities in Morristown, New Jersey, as a financial consultant in 1980, becoming the branch office manager in 1984. In 1985, he was transferred to Thomson McKinnons Indianapolis branch to be their Branch Office Manager. In 1989, Thomson McKinnon was purchased by Prudential Securities, Inc., where Hampton managed the Indianapolis office. He moved to the Grand Rapids office of prudential in 1991, where he remained until joining Raymond James & Associates in June 2002. Michael holds Series 5, 7, 8, 15, 63, 65, Life and Health Insurance, and Variable Annuity licenses. Prior to the securities industry, Michael was president of Skywheel Productions and director of audio productions and engineering for Jefke productions and Showboat Entertainment. He has been responsible for the management and career development of highly successful recording artists. In addition to his professional career, Michael has served on many boards and committees of businesses and organizations. Some of the highlights include president and board member of the Grand Rapids Rotary Club, board member of the Economic Club of Grand Rapids, board member of the Ruth Lilly Center for Health Education, and chairman of the finance committee and senior financial advisor for the corporation of Science and Technology for the State of Indiana.
